Unfortunately, on our first trip here, we didn’t have a lot of time to wander around. Since we will be returning several times, we will eventually cover as much of Rome as we can but we got in and got out on this trip so we could spend more time in Venice.

Once we arrived at our hotel we had time to kill so thought we’d walk up to the Spanish Steps. We left disappointed as they were fenced off for restoration. So another time. We had a Colosseum tour at 3:00 so we held off until afterwards to do some exploring.

After leaving the Roman Forum we walked down to see the Altar of the Fatherland Memorial (pictured above). Now, for some reason, the Romans hate this building as they see it as an eyesore, and it is called the ugliest building in all of Rome. You’ll have to judge for yourself what you think of it.

After heading back to the hotel we ventured over to the Trevi Fountain. As usual, there was a large mass of people all trying to see the fountain and to throw coins over their shoulders into it. Don’t trust any picture you see of somebody standing in front by themselves. That doesn’t happen. Our friend did manage to get down by the water to toss a coin over his shoulder, but it took a good 5 minutes to get there.

Behind you and to the right is a small alley, if you’re feeling adventurous, head up and then veer left to the restaurant La Fontana Di’Venere. It would be smart to mark it on google maps so you know where you are going. Nice small restaurant with a good menu.

The next day after our tours we headed to Piazza Navona for dinner and drinks. It was late when we walked through so all the activities were packed up and the 2 fountains (Neptune, and 4 Rivers) were dark. Again, we’ll make it back here another time.

We ate dinner at the small local restaurant Saltimbocca, try the salt cod appetizer, and had a nice time. The staff was friendly and very helpful.

After dinner, we went across the street and sat outside at La Botticella, Rome’s Pittsburgh Steelers bar. Except for all the Italian, it was like being at home in a local tavern. The Jesus on the bar with the Steelers helmet is just one interesting item to see.

I wish I had more to share, but I will add to this section after our next trip. Hoping to see The Pantheon, Piazza Navona in daytime, Spanish Steps and explore Trastevere, where I hear they have the best biscotti in the city, on our next visit among other stops.
