These Spicy Caprese Skewers with Balsamic Plum Sauce are a delicious and elegant twist on a classic Italian appetizer, perfect for parties, gatherings, or a light snack. Fresh mozzarella pearls, sweet cherry tomatoes, and aromatic basil leaves are threaded onto skewers, making for a colorful dish.

What sets this recipe apart is the addition of a sweet and spicy balsamic plum sauce, replacing the traditional balsamic glaze. This unique sauce, made with plum preserves, balsamic vinegar, and potentially a hint of spice like red pepper flakes, offers a rich, tangy sweetness with a surprising kick, elevating the Caprese experience. The plum reduction, infused with balsamic, creates a delightful counterpoint to the fresh and creamy components of the Caprese skewers.

These skewers are not only easy to assemble but also gluten-free and vegetarian, making them an excellent choice for a variety of guests. The recipe is adaptable – you can marinate the mozzarella balls in olive oil and seasonings beforehand, and even use rosemary sprigs as skewers for an extra aromatic touch. The vibrant colors and fresh flavors make these Spicy Caprese Skewers with Balsamic Plum Sauce a truly unforgettable appetizer.

Ingredients

20 grape tomatoes

1 pack of fresh mozzarella balls

Fresh basil

1 tsp crushed pepper flakes

1 jar plum preserves, about 15 oz.

1 cup balsamic

Method

In a medium sauce pan, combine the plum preserves, crushed red pepper flakes, and balsamic and bring to a slow boil. Cook until reduced by half and thickened and let cool.

On fancy toothpick or skewers, add one tomato, one mozzarella balls, and one leaf of basil. You can weave the basil around the tomato and mozzarella ball if you wish. You can also add extra mozzarella.

Arrange skewers on a platter and drizzle with the plum sauce. You can pour plum sauce into a squeeze bottle to make this step easier.
